A Stitch and a Prayer

After her fiancé returns from the Klondike gold rush in 1897, Florence Harms sets about building a new life—even though the lingering effects of illness have left her weak and vulnerable. She and her young husband, Will, work tirelessly to clear the land around their Northwest cabin, content with their modest life.

But then a stranger comes knocking and Florence suddenly senses a restlessness in Will’s spirit that she has never seen before. When he leaves her with only a note that tells her he will return before their baby’s birth, she is devastated, and the illness that stiffened her joints returns.

Counting the days until Will walks back through her door, Florence busies herself with a Tree of Life quilt displaying a map of the farm they call home. Doubts claw at her heart as Florence struggles to believe Will’s promise to return to her. Will her labor of love—and faith in God—sustain her as she waits to see her beloved once again?

Eva has lived most of her life on the farm which is the setting for her newest novel A Stitch and a Prayer and is uniquely qualified to write about the folks who people its pages.

Although strictly a work of fiction, this book was inspired by family legends and stories.

How I Got Started Writing

Some of you have been curious about my writing career. I began writing seriously after taking an advanced writing class in 1979. Since then I have sold fiction, personal experience and teaching articles to over 35 publications.

I have been called a pioneer in Christian romance, since at the time I began writing novels, there was a limited selection of Christian books for teens. Bethany House Publishers released my first teen novel Melissa for girls 12-16, in 1982. After that they published five more of my novels, three of which have been translated into Norwegian and one into Polish.

In 1986 I received the Fiction Writer of the Year Award at Warner Pacific College Writers Conference for Colleen. Four of my novels were re-released in 1996-1999. Melissa, the first book in the series was in print for 19 years.

Non-fiction books I have written are Intimate Moments (Here's Life), Listening to My Heart a journaling how-to book for Junior High Girls, and Created to Worship (Accent Publishers).

Building Christian Confidence and Building Christian Values (Bethany House Publishers), a Bible study for teens, which I co-authored with Steve Price, launched me into writing curriculum. It also gave me the opportunity to travel to Austria to assist in writing a study course for pastors and leaders in Eastern Europe after the Berlin Wall came down.

When I returned home I wrote a series of three books for women on Discovering the Heart of God (Aglow), an in-depth study of the book of Hebrews. Later I did another Bible study, Forgiveness (Gospel Light). I have done adult curriculum revision work for Accent Publications and Gospel Light and have written two VBS Adult Leader's Guides for Standard Publishing; Rescued!, And God Said, Go!

In 2012 Gospel Life reprinted my Bible Study Forgiveness, changing the title to The Gift of Forgiveness. Later that year AMG published The Three Marys: Role models for women who seek the love of Jesus.

Today, I teach Writing Your Life Story classes for Portland Community College and am active in Oregon Christian Writers (OCW) as a prayer intercessor.

I conduct journaling and quiet time workshops, as well as speaking for women's retreats and seminars. I have a tender heart for women and long to encourage them through speaking and one-on-one ministries.
